Problem

As people age there is a higher risk  of getting  Alzheimer's  disease, In the early stages a patient can still be independent needing minor help from others while on long term the patient becomes completely dependant on others.

Social Trend: The Aging Population

Inspired by a call for change in the service and product industry, we decided to focus on the issues that will be faced by the ageing population

Consumer Trend: AI Everywhere

We also know that the use of AI assistants in the near future would become a norm. It would be a good idea to find a way to use AI to help the aging population.

44 000 000

Worldwide, 44 million people suffer with forms of Alzheimer’s and dementia

747 000

Canadians have forms of Alzheimer’s and dementia

About project

Interdisciplinary design project

Students in their final semester of study learn to collaboratively confront contemporary consumer, societal and technological design challenges. Sensemaking user research and synthesis of problem understanding evolving into product design solutions that explore digital and physical aspects of user experiences.

This enables interdisciplinary understand in: interaction design, industrial design, interface design, wearables, mobile computing and user experience

My Role
  • Collaborate with my team to understand problem space

  • Help in Conducting interviews and observation

  • Collaborate in performing secondary research

  • Understand what solutions are offered within the market and create the right market research.

  • Brainstorm and sketch to perform a successful ideation phase within my team.

  • Created Low and Hi wireframes to represent the solution

  • Responsible for Prototyping the App concept and testing it.

Design Process key findings
  • Patients with Alzheimer are still independent in the early stages of the disease

  • Patients need to be reminded of minor tasks and schedules

  • Patients don't like to be monitored by others as they feel less independent

  • Patients would like to be reminded of different subjects only when needed.

Opportunity

How might we find a solution that enables the patient to be both monitored and reminded, so that they are independent and have full control over their lives?

Brainstorming/Sketches

Displayed are some of the initial sketches done for concepts discussed in previous weeks.

Here we explore form and function most convenient for each scenario

Prototyping

nudgesystem1.jpg

Using a continuous design language, we developed a system of products that could work together to aid early onset symptoms of alzheimer's disease.

The system is named “Nudge” with an integrated Artificial intelligence personality named “Nora”

Hot spot

Mounted in areas of the home

Wearable

Keeps user in touch when outside of their home

Home Base

controlled/connected through base

The device changes colour through LED. When at a neutral state it rests as blue, when it senses activity in the room it transform to green, and when it's time for a reminder it changes to red.

This feature can be mounted onto the wall through a simple keyhole feature. It can also be placed on a flat surface depending on the user’s preference.

Wearable

The pendants keeps you connected to nudge throughout the day if the user were to leave their home. It is voice and motion activated. It is simply adjusted, similar to a bolo tie.

Next Steps
  • AI can be integrated with Voice ID.

  • Repeated Usability testing until the concept is further refined.

  • Refining our concepts based on the feedback from the user testing.

  • Finding a way that the Target user can feel comfortable and relaxed that there is artificial assistance helping them with their journey.
